About Pagr

We built this because the hassle was ours first.

Pagr is made by Metanous, a Belgian custom software company that builds and runs the systems other businesses depend on. Document generation kept turning up in those projects, and it kept being the part that cost the most time for the least reason.

The same problem, on project after project

Every few months a project needed documents. Invoices, policy letters, statements, certificates. And every time, the same pattern: a designer produced a layout, a developer rebuilt it in code or in a merge-field tool, and then every small change — a moved logo, an extra column, a new legal paragraph — came back as a ticket.

The tools we tried did not fix it. Some were fast but could only handle simple documents. Some handled complex documents but only an engineer could touch the template. None of them let the person who actually owned the document build it end to end.

So we built our own engine, on the assumption we would use it internally. We did — on client platforms where documents are generated continuously and have to be right every time. It held up, the layout work stopped being a bottleneck, and the difference was big enough that we decided to make it available to everyone else.

How we think about it

Not another AI company

There is an AI assistant in Pagr, and it is the fastest way to shape a template. But the durable thing here is the rendering engine underneath it — and that was engineered, not prompted.

Infrastructure, not a demo

Pagr sits in billing and compliance paths. Async jobs return signed webhooks, reads retry safely, writes do not double-render. We built it to be put in production, because we put it in production.

Deterministic output

The AI edits the template. It never touches a render. The same template and the same data produce the same PDF, every time, at any volume — which is the only way a document engine is auditable.

A narrow job, done properly

We generate documents. We do not send them, store them for you or try to become your CRM. Keeping the scope tight is why generation is fast and why the template model can afford to be this capable.

The company behind it

Metanous

Metanous is a Belgian custom software company based near Ghent, working in development, integration and modernisation — from a first MVP to an enterprise platform. For twenty years we have built and run the systems other businesses depend on, which is where our opinions about documents come from.

Pagr is a product now, but it is still maintained by the team that uses it on client work. When something is wrong with your template, you are talking to the people who wrote the renderer.
